I don't mean to be a pain in the ass...but w.r.t. to MacOS 9.x (and 
earlier), this is nothing.  Unless I'm mistaken, the default install of 
MacOS 9.x, the user WAS (the equivalent of) "root" and they had to go 
out of their way to not be "root".  The only danger I see with MacOS X 
is in people thinking that MacOS X is equivalent to Fort Knox out of the 
box.  Which will lead some people to do things they wouldn't do 
otherwise.
