Part of the question, I think, is where you're starting from... If you're
new to programming, as I am, many of the best books are challenging, because
of the amount of knowledge they presuppose...

Here are two suggestions which I hope will be useful:

"Perl, a Beginner's Guide" by Wyke and Thomas. This seems to start from the
ground up...

This is a new book, I just picked it up, and haven't gotten into it yet, but
It looks good... this book actually explains the early steps (which on a
Windows machine are extremely daunting).

"Elements of Programming with Perl" by Andrew Johnson, published by Manning.
Mr. Johnson is very helpful, and had, last year at least, the option of
email tutorials...

There's also a helpful message board in which the author answers
questions...
