I use MacPerl to manipulate lots of text files on my mac. It is a very productive tool. I was a former REXX (among others) programmer until I started to have a need to do things on my Mac which required moderate level of programming skills.
I don't have a ready answer for the 2nd paragraph, but would sure be interested!
