~/Applications is automatically searched, but not the rest of the home
dir. Apps do still get registered when you launch them or open the
enclosing folder in Finder.

aware of them, such as when they are dragged onto the user’s disk or
when the user navigates to a folder containing them.
In any event, that still doesn't justify dumping stuff in $
{x11prefix} ...
