I think it's just an artifact of the original archive implementation.

IIRC, it's not implemented as a build phase in the same way as the other phases.

When I was working on remote-archive, I ended up thinking that a new phase (unarchive) would be the cleanest way to implement it, but never got around to generating a working patch.

Basically the archive skips all build
steps and extracts a destroot, so I don't think we need to activate a
special mode before.


I agree.

I think there was also some intention to have the portfile in the archive consulted for post-install (and uninstall) procs, but I don't think it was implemented.
