Hi John - my opinion is simple: if you are serious about your  
software, you don't want anybody running your old versions.

There might be rational marketing reasons for going against this  
logic, but I'm not in a position now to abide those reasons.

My opinion is that *everybody* should be running the newest, most  
fixed-up versions of my software. I do require upgrade fees for major  
releases, but I think the message is clear that I think the new  
releases are better.

In summary, don't give anybody an excuse to form their first  
impression of your product on an inferior, outdated release. Giving a  
"crappy" version away is just an invitation to have people think your  
product is crappy.
