John,

I wouldn't be pursuing this for the simple reason that you don't make
your 1.x release available for free anywhere else. You clearly have a
promotional model of using version 2.0 in demo mode, and not giving
version 1.x away for free, so why would you change this just for the
sake of the magazine promo? The obvious answer is because the magazine
promo is likely to provide significant amounts of coverage.

Put another way, if you are willing to change your promotional
strategy to fit the magazine, would you also be willing to make
version 1.x available for free from your web site?

There are plenty of reasons for not releasing an old version for free,
and you've clearly already decided that your promotional strategy
doesn't include this practice. Just because a tempting opportunity
comes along, don't deviate from your chosen strategy.

Regards,

John Gronow.
