I find the buttons out of whack as well. I also think the green check mark is overused and seems boring when compared to the original design. Also IMO the stylized type of the software name does not go well with the rest of the content or the software. Overall, except for the big yellow star, I kinda like the old design.
The quote from the professor, blog excerpt and the site-nav at the top are definite pluses in the new one.
