Based on his description of how far he got, he appears to have the
updated firmware. And, bootcamp itself (as opposed to the firmware
update) is not necessary unless you want to get drivers to make windows
function nicely. Unfortunately I can't help beyond that, since I've
never tried Linux on an Intel Mac Mini, only a MacBook Pro, and even on
the MBP I'm not sure of which livecds (if any) support a graphical
environment.
