I managed to compile the drivers by following some advice on the following forum: http://www.phoronix.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1033. I can't remember exactly how I managed it but it involved comments #5 and #6. I don't think I actually managed to apply the patches successfully. I also had to ^C out of the ati installer so I could access the extracted source files in /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/ before they got deleted.
