Well, glad I helped, even if in a round-about way.  I think actually  
we were talking about exactly the same thing, I must just not have  
communicated it very well.  I press Option e, release them, and then  
hit the vowel I want to have the diacritic for. So, I'm not sure where  
the confusion was, but glad you got it.
