Hi Donna, I usually take the precaution of putting my MacBook to sleep before I close the lid. If you press the circular power just above the rightmost key at the top of your keyboard, a system dialog window will come up. You'll hear "loginwindow system dialog Restart button". VO-left arrow and there will be an announcement: "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" VO-right arrow from the announcement and you will get the buttons for "Restart", "Sleep", "Cancel", and "Shut Down". If you VO-right arrow to the "Sleep" button and press it (VO-Space), your MacBook should be put to sleep. This should work even if for some reason your computer does not correctly sense that the lid is closed and go to sleep. If your fans are running, and you use this method to put your MacBook to sleep, you should shortly hear them stop running. Close the lid. If you want to bring the MacBook out of its sleep state (and you didn't close the lid), just press any key. I usually press the Fn key at the lower left of the keyboard to do this.
