You can get the mac book to stay awake when you are using / if you are using
external monitors or / and keyboards.

We've got a number of them at work that do this.

Did you have an external keyboard attached?  I have encountered situations
where even the PC laptop my employer provided has not gone to sleep and I
pulled it out of my backpack to find it nearly melting down. :)  If it
continues, you may want to have a chat with Apple Care.

hybernating? it's called sleeping on the mac and that is what it does when
you close the lid.
