One note here: you can't then use your iCloud address as your Apple ID. I have my Gmail as my ID, but once I made my iCloud address I wanted to switch over to that and leave Gmail behind. Unfortunately, since iCloud addresses are technically Apple IDs in themselves, you can't change your ID from whatever it is now to your new iCloud address. At least, I haven't found a way, and Google seems to indicate that I'm not alone in my frustration. I don't understand exactly how the system works (how do you then have two Apple IDs with one password, for instance) but the bottom line is the same. Of course this won't impact your use of iCloud at all, but I thought I'd mention it in case you tried to do the same thing I wanted to do and couldn't work out why it is disallowed.
