Yep, ditto. You can log in using your new iCloud address, but Apple seems to give them special treatment, such that you can't actually make your primary identifier your iCloud address. Annoying as hell, but just ignore it.
And a caution: whatever you do, do not remove your old email address from AppleID.apple.com, or you're locked out of your account unless you still have access to your old address! Instead, simply change your contact email address to your new iCloud one, and ignore the old address.
