Nope, I have a MBP, and it works just fine. And you can choose the right or
left option key.

Thank you.

I have not played with this method though I have seen it in the menu. My
initial thought was that it needed a full mac keyboard. I have a laptop.
That's why I didn't attempt to use it.

Hi.

You can change it to use either option key. In the popup, you can select left,
right or both option keys.

Hello,

I hope someone can clear something up for me. Since the keyboard commander
discussion has come up, I've heard more than one user referred to the right
option key as the one to use. Is that correct or can it be either option Key?

Thanks

Thanks Kliphton, I’ve learnt something new from you, option U for unread

I personally like the commander method. There are ones already built in. Like
option M to get to mail, option s to get to safari, option t for the time,
option u for unread email count. And you can create your own also. I have
option b for my blogging app, option v to open my video conversion app, and
option w to open VM fusion. JMO

Subject: Re: Novice/New VO User & Mac OSX "mail" Launch

 Hello Robin,

We as blind and low vision users are very fortunate to have the alternatives we
do and the accesssibility within the Mack OS. It's not about a right or wrong
way to do something. It's about something we as a visually impaired community
have struggled with for years, choice. All of us on this list have varying
levels of expertise using the Mac. In many cases, the basic mac keystrokes are
synonymous with what one can use with voiceover. That in itself is a sign of
true accessibility. I frankly have learned something from this thread not
knowing all of the various ways one can get to a specific program. I too like
to use my doc or spotlight. However I was not aware of the keystrokes to get
through finder to accomplish the same thing. When I first got my Mac, I felt
the combination of keystrokes to use voice over felt cumbersome. I learned the
trackpad gestures. At the time, that was easy enough for me to at least figure
out my way around the OS. I subsequently got more familiar with the
keystrokes. If our new Mac user has issues with dexterity and the voiceover
keystrokes, triple tap on the bottom of the trackpad to get to the dock. Use
the arrow keys to navigate the dock. Henceforth another way to get what you
want. We have had many suggestions within this thread. I hope The original
poster finds them helpful.

As I understand it, the "Orginal Message" dealt with a "new" MacBook Air user,
and he/she wanted to know the quickest way to get to the "mail" program on the
Mac OSX. I presumed he/she didn't know very much about VO (VoiceOver) so I
decided to provide him/her the quickest way to get there as I have been
informed by Ol'Sighty using Basic Mac OSX KeyBoard Commands rather than using
Basic VO KeyBoard Commands. I agree there are quite a few ways to perform the
same function on a Mac.

I thought "we" as "the Blind & LowVision Community" wanted to utilize Basic Mac
OSX KeyBoard Commands rather than use alternative KeyBoard Commands, but I
presume from the responses on "This List", I'm wrong about that as well.

Yet another is to go to Finder, hit cmd-shift-a to open the Applications
folder, and navigate to and open Mail from there. Yes, the Mac usually has many
ways to skin the proverbial cat. I prefer Spotlight for opening things, but
that's just me.

Another alternative is just to put an alias on your desktop. I've done that

I don't really think your method is faster. You go to the dock, type m or ma
and mail is there; do enter or vo-space. I've never done this other method
myself but I suppose it's all about what one is used to; you always think what
you are used to doing is fastest.

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
"This I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord
never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness."

I suggest, what I presume would be a quicker way to Launch "The Mail" program
on a MacBook Air, and that IS "SpotLight". To activate, I recall, you simply do
the following:

Press COM + Space Bar
Then
Type "Mail"
Then
Press either Enter/Return Key OR CRTL + OPT + Space Bar
(This should LAUNCH your "Mail" program on your MacBook Air if I am CORRECT
with the Steps.)

COM = Command Key
CRTL = Control Key
OPT = Options Key

Am I RIGHT Advanced VoiceOver (VO) users??? I'm fairly NEW as a Totally Blind
VO user myself, but I feel that the Steps that I listed above are the Fastest
way to LAUNCH the "Mail" program on a MacBook Air rather than going to "The
DOC", and then selecting "Mail" from "The DOC".
