I finally solved the problem. As nothing I did worked out, I returned to the store, and I found out that the seller gave me the wrong one. They changed it for a thunderbolt, and now I'm connected all the time.

The Ethernet adaptor should indeed “Just work” when connected.

Go to System Preferences, Network. Look at the Services list. How does it look? The adaptor (Thunderbolt or USB) should show as connected. If it doesn’t, then what does it show? There’s an explanatory message just under the table when the adaptor is selected.
