VO-space is the way, but you have to be on the link. I usually interact with the text and then move to the link, or try vo-cmd-l to get to it. Either way, if you don't interact, focus may not be on the link. You could also try moving to the link as you're doing now, then press vo-shift-f4 to move VO's focus o your keyboard cursor.
