By menu bar, are you referring to the Applications menu? I set that to Never and things looked to get a bit goofy. I will go at it again later and look at what happens when I change options one at a time.

I also turned off the full screen mini bar, not even sure if I used that yet.

Its better. I did find I could not use the standard Windows selection method when holding control key and selecting non contiguous files. Can that be the Windows 8 keyboard profile?

I will disable VO while in Windows. Its a bit strange to be in Windows and accessing the Apple menu bar.

Thanks as always for your help.

Yes, don’t use Unity. Switch in and out of full-screen mode with
Control-Command-F (check Window menu), or carefully operate the VM in
single-window mode only. In the View menu, turn off the showing of everything
in full-screen (not strictly necessary, but safe and cool). Now in global
Preferences, set the showing of the menu bar to “Never”. You should not have
problems navigating in OS X or Windows, nor any phantom window then.

One more thing: sometimes VoiceOver gets “Stuck” if it was running while you
are in a VM. The remedy is to minimise transitions between operating systems,
or turn VO off while in Windows. A good idea anyway, of course.
