Kevin,
Scott's talking about the fact that TomTom has just released a car kit for
their GPS app that lets you plug an iPod Touch or older generation iPhone
into a holder. The holder is like slipping on a case for the device, and
adds GPS functionality that allows you to use that device with their GPS
navigation app. In principle, this GPS interface could be used by any app
for the device. The problem is that TomTom's own GPS navigation app is not
accessible. They also make a car kit for the iPhone 3GS (which is different
and more expensive), where they use the car kit to boost GPS signal
strength. Unfortunately, the viphone list hasn't set up Mailing List
archiving, so it's a pain to try to point people to posts and discussions
there. There's a November 20 ilounge article describing the TomTom car kit
release (the separate one for the iPod Touch), and much earlier this summer
there were articles at sites like Gizmodo about the fact that these add-ons
gave older iPod Touch models the ability to use GPS navigation.
Cheers,
Esther

Donal,
Navigon's MobileNavigator, which is available for several areas, is quite
accessible as is. A umber of us on the VI Phone list have compiled some
suggestions we have shared with Navigon to perhaps tweak things a bit that
will be useful both for sighted and non-sighted users alike. This is the
most affordable and accessible solution for the iPhone currently. It does
not work on the iPod Touch yet, but certainly is possible I would imagine
with the release of the Tom Tom GPS package. Now of course this is purely
speculation on my part based on something someone had said, but hey anything
is possible. THe point is if there is enough interest, it is possible
Navigon might consider addressing this in the future.

Very interesting Scott thanks. I'm particularly interested in your comments
regarding the GPS app. How accessible is it?

You know it comes down to whether you want a phone as well and the
possibility of using a GPS solution or not. The Touch could possibly have a
GPS solution added as an external item, but of course the other
consideration is the data plan. I personally decided to just get the iPhone
for my wife and I and I do get my use out of the data plan.
I hope that gives you some things to consider. The interface is the same
with a few differences do to the fact one is the iPhone and one is the iPod
Touch, but the experience is the same.

I am faced with something of a dilemma. It's a nice one, but a dilemma none
the less.
The phone carrier (O2) in Ireland who offers the iPhone is offering me a
very good upgrade price. So my dilemma is whether to buy the iPhone now, or
wait till the States to get the touch. I presume the interaction on both
devices is the same? I'd be very interested to hear the thoughts and
experiences of people on the list who have tried both.
In light of the ludicrous over-pricing by Intel on their new reader, isn't
it truly fantastic to have the choice between two off-the-shelf devices?
Cheers
Donal
