I use El Capitan daily on my macbook pro mid 2012 and it works just fine. Of course their are occasional bugs, but that's expected. I'd say go ahead and upgrade. Also, make a time machine backup if you can. That way if you seriously hate it, you can downgrade. In my opinion Yosemite was a horrible release, and El Capitan beets it by a long shot.
