Hello, I use Android on a regular basis. there are several Braille keyboards for Android. the problem is that they require you to turn off explore by touch. explore by touch is critical for navigating your phone using gestures. so, I have never wanted to install one of these keyboards and try to make it usable.

The default Google text to speech voices are pretty terrible. this might lead you to believe that speech on Android is not quite as good as speech on iOS. in fact, speech on Android is far superior to that on iOS. the number of Manufacturers and the variety of voices you can actually purchase or download for free is far and beyond that available on iOS. Android also had pronunciation dictionaries available starting with 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich which are only now being introduced in iOS 10.

Braille is another matter. yes it's nice to be able to hook up the few supported Braille displays; however, they are not leveraging the full power of Android to make Braille the wonderful experience that it could be. especially not compared with iOS.

Best,

Erik

Please could someone do a podcast on how to use Braille output on their I phone please? I don’t know how to use it but heard all of Jonathan’s podcast today when he was unboxing his I phone 7 plus and he was so fast on Braille output. I’d like to use it but the dots are not in the same place as I don’t know how to calibrate the dots and can you chord i.e. do all the six finger combinations as you do on a perkins? Does Android have this method? Just curious. Never used Android as when I heard it a long time ago, didn’t like the voices.

Thanks.

Kawal.
