Yes, using the iPhone is very efficient.  You can't learn how to use it in a 
few minutes of playing with it.  Once you use it for a while, you'll learn the 
location of things, and won't need to tap all over the screen.
There are two ways to type on the phone.  You can find the letter you want, and 
double-tap.  The method I use most of the time is the split tap method.  Using 
this method, find the letter you want to use with one finger, and tap anywhere 
on the screen with another.
