HI, I bought my iPhone last Thursday. My initial observations are that it is perfectly usable after a short time. Yes, the method of text-input takes some getting used to (I'd say I'm only 60% as fast as I was on my old n82) but I can notice a speed improvement even after such a short time. In terms of the navigation, there are several points. Firstly, those who suggest that good spatial awareness makes this device more usable are correct. It certainly helps to be able to know roughly on the screen where something resides. You might miss it by a centimetre (half an inch) but you'll hit the item you are looking for in no time. Secondly, one of the factors that has helped me, is the ability to rearrange the home screen to suit myself. If you put something down on a surface, you'll usually remember roughly where it is, (I know I do) and using these devices is no different. So one of the first things I did when I got mine was to place the icons in positions that suited me. As a consequence I developed a good working mental map of the screen layout. Another thing that has really helped me to become so quickly familiar with the iPhone is the fact that the same non-speech audio cues are incorporated into the interface as those found on Snow Leopard. I find that I don't have to listen to all the verbal descriptions of items provided from the synthesiser but use the other sounds emanating from the device rather a lot. Anyway, these are just the thoughts of an absolute novice with this device. There are plenty of people on this list who are far more expert in its use than I, so if they disagree with what I've said here, I'd take their view over mine on this one.
