I had this happen one time the other day after installing the 10.12.5 update, it was a one time thing though, after that it worked fine. I had a similar issue with my laptop back on Snow Leppard. Once I installed Lion, it resolved itself and I had done a clean install, I always do clean installs with every major new operating system version. Then I customize my preferences the way I want and finally I copy my itunes content back to the computer. It takes a bit more time but I think it prevents problems like this. I agree with the clean install idea in this case as well.

I have thought about it, but I have a lot of customizations to allow my Mac to work as a web server, and I’m just too lazy to go through and redo them all. :)

As a result, I’ve been dealing with this for a year and just putting it off. I don’t shut down my computer often, so it hasn’t been a huge hassle.

If, however, I could get a terminal command to work, I’d be happy enough with that.

The part that puzzles me is that it will shutdown and restart during an upgrade.

Have you given thought to doing a clean install of Sierra? I also have a mid 2012 MBP, do not have these issues.

HI all,

I’ve had this issue ever since I upgraded to Sierra, but I’m only just now getting around to attempting to fix it.

If I choose “restart” or “Shutdown” for my Mac it doesn’t shutdown all the way. It goes through the motions, but it will not restart and doesn’t actually shut off.

The funny thing is, that if I do an OS upgrade, the computer will shutdown and restart during that process.

So, any thoughts on how I can troubleshoot/fix this?

I’m open to any terminal commands that I can use to force a shutdown and/or restart.

Thx,
Jeff
