Do you have any software that runs in the background? In particular,
any antivirus or security software? If so, that would be the first type
of process that I would suspect in this case.

As a result, I think there must be something preventing it from shutting down.
Tim, what are the keystrokes for those two functions and how can I
access the activity monitor?

Also, this sort of thing usually happens, obviously, when some process
is not allowing your Mac to shut down properly. I'd try to reset the
pRAM and/or an SMC reset. Try the pRAM first, then if there's no
change, try the SMC reset. If neither of those help, there's likely
something in the Activity Monitor that can be investigated.
