Hi, there’s no need at all to add Linux. Your Mac already has a fully functional unix shell under the hood. This is what the terminal program gives you access too. You could for example enable ssh so that your Mac receives connections and your brother could remotely log in. He’d be at home in the BSD unix environment that the pretty pictures on the Mac run on.:)
As for the busy messages, I would back up your dada, immediately reformat your disk and restore it. Time Machine is a great application for just this project. Your file system is likely either corrupted or possibly to full. If you’re running out of disk this could also cause the problem and can be helped with deleting files but in my experience the defragmentation on a Mac on rotating drives had problems over time. So in order I’d backup your disk completely, enter recovery mode, reformat the disk, reinstall the OS and restore what you want. You could also restore the full backup and skip the second step but you might restore any applications causing problems so it’s your call.
