Hi,

With Jonathan's good advice regarding different connected volumes, do the
following:

sudo cp -av source_folder target_location

As Alex mentioned, when the password prompt is displayed, enter your regular
Admin password. You will not get any feedback while entering it. It will just
ask for the password again if you enter the wrong one, or move on if it's good.
Again, you can still use the copy/paste method to ensure your source and
target locations are entered using the correct syntax.

HTH.

when I tried to move stuff in the terminal as you instructed, it said
“password” after I typed the sudo mv source destination line, so I retyped
everything with the password and then terminal quit unexpectedly after a little
while when I thought it was actually working! totally frustrating this whole
thing! If all else fails, I can leave the folder where it is, but I really
really want everything in one place, and then the disk where the files were can
be used as a time machine backup disk. *sigh*

thanks for all the help, and patience!!
