FaceTime works with other FaceTime users through the internet. If you call 
someone using FaceTime, you don't need your iPhone at all. It's like Skype 
calling, if you're familiar with that.

If you want, though, you can also make regular phone calls with FaceTime. This 
requires your iPhone to be nearby. Some carriers offer wifi calling, which lets 
you use a Mac, iPad or other device to make regular phone calls without your 
iPhone present. Ask your carrier about wifi calling; if you have it, turn it on 
in iPhone settings > Phone, then your other Apple devices should ask you if you 
want to use it on them as well.
