Just so you know, you can make audio calls to other FaceTime users, again, like Skype. Phone calls have to be audio, but pure FaceTime calls don't have to be video.
If you have Siri on your Macs, which you should if you have 10.12 or newer, try telling Siri to "make a FaceTime call to contact", where "contact" is the name of the person or the phone number. You might have to delve into iOS' Phone settings first, I honestly don't remember. The good news is the whole process is accessible, so any guide online will be one you can follow if you're feeling confident with VO on your phone. As for the Mac, Siri should be enough to start your call, and if the other person ends it, you don't need to do anything.
