Well, I had a go today on my Macbook pro and successfully facetimed my wife on
her Iphone.
It was very easy and now I wonder why I was just so afraid to try it.
Thanks to you guys, I'm feeling quite confident with Facetime now.
My next task is to do the same on my Imac 27. I think it should work, just as
easily.

Just so you know, you can make audio calls to other FaceTime users, again,
like Skype. Phone calls have to be audio, but pure FaceTime calls don't have to
be video.
If you have Siri on your Macs, which you should if you have 10.12 or newer,
try telling Siri to "make a FaceTime call to contact", where "contact" is the
name of the person or the phone number. You might have to delve into iOS' Phone
settings first, I honestly don't remember. The good news is the whole process
is accessible, so any guide online will be one you can follow if you're feeling
confident with VO on your phone. As for the Mac, Siri should be enough to start
your call, and if the other person ends it, you don't need to do anything. If
they don't, just vo-left or vo-right until you find the "end call" button, then
vo0space to press it.

As for making other, non video but regular calls on my Imac, by also using
my Iphone. I think I'll leave this for another day as I already get free
telephone calls throughout the UK from my ISP.
In her book, Janet Ingber - Everything You Need to Know to Use the Mac
explains in great detail how to do this second task, but unfortunately, she
does not, in her book, explain how to use the Facetime facility, step by step,
on a Macbook pro.
I'd love a step-by-step guide in just how to make a facetime call to Sydney
Austrailia, by tomorrow morning as my Mother in law is staying with us this
evening and she has just become a Grand-mother.
She's almost blind, hence my desire to do this on my Macbook, with it's
larger screen, as opposed to my wife trying this on her little Iphone 4s, so my
Mother in law may see her little Grand daughter.
Incidentaly, for members who do wish to make telephone calls on their Imac
by incorporating the use of an Iphone, here is what Janet Ingber has to say
about this.

"Making and Receiving Phone Calls on Your Mac
If you use an iPhone, it is now possible to use your Mac as a speakerphone
for both receiving and making calls from your Mac. Your iPhone must be running
iOS 8.0 or later and your Mac must be using Mac 10.10, Yosemite or later. (El
Capitan is the operating system after Yosemite, so the feature works with it.)
Set-Up
Both your Mac and iPhone need to be signed into the same iCloud Account and
the same Apple ID. Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices and they must also
be on the same Wi-Fi network.
* On the Mac, open FaceTime. If it’s on the Dock, do a one-finger
double-tap. If you want to open it from the Applications folder, get to the
Finder with Command-Tab.
* Next, open Preferences with Command-, Tab to Settings, and if it’s not
selected, select it with VO-Spacebar.
* VO-Right Arrow to “iPhone Cellular Calls” and if that feature isn’t
checked, check it with VO-Spacebar. On the iPhone, go to Settings/FaceTime and
make sure iPhone Cellular Calls is checked.
By default, your Mac’s internal microphone is selected. You may decide to
use an external microphone. This will improve the sound, but the Mac’s internal
microphone does a fair job.
Making a Call from Your Mac
* Open FaceTime as described above.
* VO-Right Arrow to the Audio radio button and select it with VO-Spacebar.
* VO-Right Arrow to the edit box and enter the name, email address or phone
number of the person you want to call.
* VO-Right Arrow to the results table and interact with VO-Spacebar. Locate
the correct result and press the spacebar.
* A menu will appear. The first option refers to the iPhone and can be
ignored. Go to the second option, which will be the number of the person you
want to call. Press the Return key.
* Once you are done with your call, VO-End to the End button and select it.
Receiving a Call on Your Mac
The iPhone will start ringing a few seconds before the Mac makes its
incoming call sound. If the caller has a custom ringtone, it doesn’t play on
the Mac; you will hear the default tone. A FaceTime window will automatically
open and by default, you will be placed on the Accept button. Select the button
with VO-Spacebar and start talking. When you are finished, VO-End to the End
button.
Although the Mac doesn’t play custom ringtones, you can choose from several
Apple ringtones for it. Open FaceTime Preferences and select the Settings tab.
Next VO-Right Arrow to the Ringtone pop up menu and select a ringtone. No
matter who calls, that is the ringtone that will play."

FaceTime works with other FaceTime users through the internet. If you
call someone using FaceTime, you don't need your iPhone at all. It's like Skype
calling, if you're familiar with that.
If you want, though, you can also make regular phone calls with FaceTime.
This requires your iPhone to be nearby. Some carriers offer wifi calling, which
lets you use a Mac, iPad or other device to make regular phone calls without
your iPhone present. Ask your carrier about wifi calling; if you have it, turn
it on in iPhone settings > Phone, then your other Apple devices should ask you
if you want to use it on them as well.

Concerning facetime on the Macbook. Can I use it to talk to my nephew
In Sydney without having to use my Iphone as well. In other words, is the
Macbook a stand alone device which will allow me access to facetime anywhere as
long as I have an internet wi fi connection?
