Is it a mac book with an optical drive on the right hand side of the device?

 Yes you should notice some difference, 
But I'd suggest an SSD also with a ram up grade.

Then you will notice a bigger change.

As for changing the ram,
 You should be able to do it yourself without issue.

 It's not difficult to do the ram or the ssd change.

Hello I have a late 2009 macbook.

it currently has 2 gig ram but the max it would take is 4 gig

if I were to upgrade the ram will I notice a huge improvement?

also where do you go to get the ram changed on the computer?
