It’s not necessarily that the main router is flaky. Signals only travel so far, and if you have a big area the signal from the main router may not be strong enough for your devices. In my case, in the back of the house where signal strength was 2 of 3 bars, I kept losing the connection. As soon as I placed the extender in the middle of the house, the signal in back went up to 3 of 3 bars, and I have a reliable connection.
