Yes, I'm not surprised. I'm just not recalling exactly when it was removed from what models, and whether or not it's now too late to pick up any that still have it unused.
As to why, I suspect it's as simple as most sighted computer users, perhaps I should say many sighted users have a strong aversion to automated sounds from their machines, even at the boot stage. However, what is not understandable is why this can't be a configurable option those of us who rely on it might choose to invoke in ou machine profiles. I think someone filed a bug, but I also think it was a bug too restricted by machine model. I could be wrong.
