Hi, Dave:

Yes, it does have to do with TRS terminations. Why is, of course, a
business/philosophical question I can't answer. How is also something I
can't describe off the top of my head, but I did find this web link:

https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/4bxjn8/whats_the_deal_with_ios_vs_android_inline_controls/

And yet more detailed info here, including some history of how we got
here in these links:

https://www.headphonesty.com/2019/04/headphone-jacks-plugs-explained/

https://www.provideocoalition.com/ts-trs-trrs-trrrs-combating-the-misconnection-epidemic/

And here possibly an even more clearly articulated explanation:

http://wiki.robotz.com/index.php/TRRS_Phono_Plug

This last article notes the existence of plugs that will remedy the
problem our friend has experienced, i.e. swap the terminations--but one
would need to find the appropriate converter plug.

Personal note on this -- I first ran into this issue over a decade ago
when I bought a Bose Quiet Comfort 3 noise cancelling headset. Many is
the flight I took with those Bose playing no music, simply cancelling
much of the jet engine noise while I tried to sleep.

The Quiet Comfort came with two cables. One was for use with Apple
devices, the other for use with PCs and Android. This is where I became
experientially aware of the discrepencies.
