More bad news. Now, even after switching back to a wired mouse, the system did it again. I'm starting to think there's a real live hardware problem in there. I'm also thinking of reverting to Catalina to see if things return to normal with the trackball. Any good ideas on how to do that? Would a manual re-install do it, or would I have to wipe the boot disk and do it that way, which means I'd wind up deleting some key stuff, like Mail settings and other third-party applications that have been installed, like Acrobat, Dropbox, etc.?

Wow. That is interesting. I am having inconsistency issues with a standard
Apple wireless keyboard. This is one of the older original ones, and it some
times stops working and I need to reconnect it. I have not, though, encountered
a device causing that kind of an error.

After upgrading a 2016 iMac 21.5" i5 machine from Catalina to Big Sur, an
interesting problem has reared its quite ugly head. When a Kensington Expert Mouse
trackball is connected via Bluetooth and the system is shut down in the normal way,
it goes almost all the way down to black, then an error window appears which says
something went wrong, there's a long long report displayed, and a couple buttons
which can send said report to Apple or not. Apple recommended a re-install of Big
Sur, which I did yesterday. The problem seemed to go away, but it's back today. When
I changed from using the trackball back to using the standard USB wired mouse, the
problem doesn't happen. I have a third option--the Kensington Expert Mouse can
connect not only to Bluetooth, but also to one of those Logitech wireless receivers
that work on the same principle as Bluetooth but are technically not Bluetooth. I'm
going to try this next and report back. Has anyone had or heard of a problem with a
Bluetooth pointing device on Big Sur?
