Right. Thought that was kind of silly, but maybe all that hex will tell someone something we mere users can't possibly decipher on our own.

I think before anything else gets done about this problem, I'm going to downgrade back to Catalina from a Time Machine full backup made just before the upgrade was applied. Sure wish it was accessible to do that. Unfortunately, since there's no operating system yet on the Command-R-at-start screen, I'll need some sighted assistance to choose the TM backup to use. That won't be a problem though, just a hindrance/annoyance.

I believe the crash file you sent said it was a 16 inch machine. Or maybe that was the revision of iMac. In any case, unless one has the source code, none of the information in that file is very useful. It does tell you there are 9 threads and thread 7 (the eight thread ) crashed. But it doesn't even say what the process name was . Or was this a kernel crash?

Best wishes,

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Taking it in to a real Apple store isn't outside the realm of possibility, but it's a great big 21.5" iMac, and since it's going on four-and-a-half years old, the shipping packaging is long gone. I'll give Apple a call in the a.m. and start trying to set something up to diagnose this problem. I can certainly start with one of the reports that gets generated when it happens, a copy of which I saved recently. If anyone wants to have a look at it, help yourself. <https://www.dropbox.com/s/ej6bl9jgbjs1nut/Report.rtf?dl=0>

More bad news. Now, even after switching back to a wired mouse, the system did it again. I'm starting to think there's a real live hardware problem in there.

It's probably time to find a hardware testing utility. You may need to contact Apple for testing to be done.
