Abbyy fine reader express can be used directly with some scanners. the problem is, how to know which scanners those are prior to purchase and finding out yours isn't one such. And you can't adjust the settings for brightness etc. For these and a host of other reasons, no, it is not like Kurzweil 1000. It also doesn't cost as much.
