For those of you who have been following this thread…I have solved my hardware 
growler issue.  For those who care, I don't think it is a good solution but, 
here it is…

I have to keep hardware growler running.  Unlike growler mail or growler 
Safari, you actually have to have hardware growler running on your system in 
its own window.

If there is a way around this, so I don't have to tab through it all the time, 
I would love to know it.  In the mean time, things are working as expected.
