the official standpoint on this from a hardware point of view is this... A monitor is part of a system by default and as the system boots, part of it's boot sequence is to find a display as part of the user interface. if it can't then it's going to continue but have issues with the GPU (graphical processor unit) and OS behaviour, after all the mac / pc interface relies on a display to support it. hence the use of 15 pin D Sub / DVI / display port / mini displayport / HDMI interface as a display interface.
