First of all, I wouldn't use Pages to simply read through a document.
TextEdit works much better for this.
Pages is a word processing application. It means, at least to me, it is
something I must be able to use to write a document, but also to read
it.
Why in 2011-2012 should I use 2 different applications to accomplish 2
very
related task (writing and reading)? It is a non-sense, at least for me.
As for knowing whether a note is present, if you interact with a page,
VO
says "3 items" normally, for header, body and footer, but if there's a
text
box present, it says "4 items".
Too complicated. What is needed is a way to know if in a given
paragraph a
note reference is present and, if it is, I have to be able to read its
content without leaving the text area. In Microsoft Word, using JAWS, if
I
am reading a text paragraph by paragraph, the screen reader says "X
reference present"; the same if I am reading line by line. If I want, I
can
have the notes read out or I can skip them if I do not care about them.
The
same for heading. I do not want to go around the screen to discover
relevant
informations, I want the screen reader to report them to me, when and if
I
need. We are not talking about Plato's dialogs, about philosophy, we are
talking about software and features. I do really welcome differences in
ways
a task can be accomplished, but efficence should be the most important
criteria to be considered.
As I said before, simply reading through a document is better done
using
TextEdit.
And as I said before, Pages must be a confortable work environment for
writing and editing, and for reading. My mother, wich is sighted,
doesn't
switch between Pages and text edit: she just open the document she
wants,
and she uses it. The same result is possible for me when I work under
Windows. The same must be possible for all of us when working under
MacOSX.
Also, what do you call a productive environment? I work as a
professional
translator and Pages works fine for me.
I am working with a collegue and friend on a very long and complex book
about science history. He works under Windows, I would like to work
under
MacOSX. The book will contain many many notes, some pics, a number of
cross
references and tables. I need to read his work to check out if the notes
are
in the correct place and to be sure the formatting is consistent. Of
course, i need to add my parts to his work. I need to be sure the titles
and
subtitles have the correct hierarchical level and are properly
formatted. I
need to be sure the lists are properly marked and formatted. And I want
the
screen reader to give me those information while scanning the text, I do
not
want to be forced to scan the text to glean what I need going around the
Pages' interface. Those features are very possible to implement and, if
they
are, they will not change your way to accomplish your work, but tey'll
make
mine easier. I sent many many request to Apple Accessibility and
reported
bugs over and over. But nothing has changed. Voice Over Braille support
remains absolutely insufficient, advanced word processing is poorly
supported, minimaly advanced spreadsheet manipulation is problematicaly
complicated and the new fantastic and long awaited international voices
are
in need of a intense and deep psychoanalytic support, 'cause they are
having
some gender difficulties. Let's wait and hope, because, as we say in
Italy,
hope is the last to die! :)

- Show quoted text -Hi all, Vic and 1 or 2 others touched on this in this
topic and the guys from the voiceoveron podcast always encourage it so I
just want to ask, How many of you actually complain and submit bugs to
[email protected] ???? Those guys actually listen even if it
doesn't always look like they're ignoring the mails and just remember
they can't fix a problem if they're not aware of the problem, they don't
use voiceover each and every day like all people on this list.
Anyway just my opinion it would be interesting to know how many people
actually give apple feedback reguarding bugs.
