This issue sounds all too familiar. the best resolution is this.

you need to do a clean reinstall of OS X and it's applications. I came across 
this when I first took on my current macbook pro where a software glitch had 
occured. so, from my experience with system resets, I completely formatted and 
reinstalled from scratch, resolving the bug in question which doesn't exactly 
tie in with your fault but has similar issues. problem resolved and I managed 
to tailor the OS install how I wanted it (10.6)

I always encourage anyone who has an issue like this out of the box to perform 
a system rebuild as every now and again at the factory, an installation may 
generate a flaw and expose itself or something else. so a good bit of advice if 
you're competent is to re-install the OS and apps.
