Hi Tim and others,

        This last suggestion worked!  I followed your directions about Finder 
and deleting the file you pointed me to.  I did this on the two mac's I 
recently updated to Mountain Lion.  They are now using Google Drive correctly.  

Thanks Tim very much for your help problem solving this.  I never would have 
figured out what to do without the clear directions you provided,  especially 
those concerning the Library folders.  I've deleted plists in the past but this 
is the first time I visited this part of my Mac when problem solving.

I hope other Google Drive users don't need to follow these steps but if needed 
this thread provides the answer.
