I should also like some clarification on that point.  Frankly, it seems to me 
that the app dev should do some antivirus scanning on what they put out:  but, 
by the same turn, frenkly, I think the end consumer must bear the 
responsibility for the security of their own machines and scan what ever comes 
in-be it from the app store or what ever source.  This, in my view, means 
installing a good and easy to use antivirus package on their Mac.  If you don't 
mind a shameless plug here, I'd say go with ClamXAV.
