When you are on the drive in disk utility, do a command-i for the Get Info 
window.  See if there is any kind of error message showing.  If it is showing 
up in disk utility, the Mac is seeing it.  However, it seems the volume is not 
mounting.  You can, if possible, see if you can run a disk repair as well from 
the First Aid tab.
