Well, the plot thickens … 

I tried repairing the disk. It got all the way to the point where it said 
"preparing partitions as required" then I got an error message saying the 
repair had stopped, that the disk can't be repaired, back up whatever files I 
can, etc.  So I unplugged the disk, and plugged it back in again, and now it's 
mounted.  Trying to decide whether to trust it, or just go get another drive.
