Years ago (1998?) I had been renting a wifi router box from my cable
provider for a while and then decided to keep the money to myself and
buy my own unit. I purposly purchased two separate boxes - the cable
modem and the wifi/router. Over the years I've upgraded my wifi a couple
times as the world moved through the alphabet of standards and speeds.
Most recently I swapped out my old Netgear 802.11G box for an Airport
extreme after an unpleasant attempt to use a D-Link DIR-628 802.11N.
Just last week my cable mode died after about 9 years of service so I
was able to replace that with a newer faster Motorola SurfBoard DOCSIS
3.0 modem. In other words, this might be a good time to replace the
all-in-one with separate boxes for long term sanity.
As a side note, my first owned modem met an early demise after my (then)
girlfriend and I returned from a weekend trip to discover a colony of
ants had moved into it. There were ants everywhere moving eggs and such
into their new warm comfy wifi hotel. We only noticed because the wifi
wasn't working. The whole thing went into a trash bag.

Hi,
We just got an extreme and I have a few questions.
We currently have one of those modem/router boxes from our internet provider.
We want to replace the router in that box with the extreme.
How is this done? Do I deactivate the router in the modem box, then attach the
extreme to the box and configure the extreme?
Talking to our internet provider about the extreme wouldn't be helpful, as they
don't like people using other devices, even though you can do this.
thanks for any info,
Cait
