Yes,
For whatever reason, changing to the Kanotix repository, downloading the
latest madwifi, and deleting all the old madwifi solved the problem.
One disappointing thing about this is that now the 2.6.16.18 kernel I have
is not really a viable fallback kernel because it lacks wireless support
now (the old module having been automatically deleted by apt). Seems like
there should be a way to run multiple kernels on the same machine
(obviously not at the same time) all with wireless.
I THINK this ticket can be closed, although it may reveal some bug(s).
