Could it be that there is a high noise level on the channel your AP is
running on? This is more probable if you're working with 2.4 GHz. Try
switching to another channel (which should be at least 3 channels from the
currently used, or one of the 5 GHz channels) and see if that changes
something.

/dev/uradom to an nfs share from two laptops with atheros cards, one
sitting 1 meter from the access point, the other 4 meters... the closer
one got through just fine, the other one's still at it and filling its
dmesg buffer with nfs timeout messages.

Can you please repeat the test, this time putting the laptop with 4m
distance to the position the other laptop with 1m distance had, and vice
versa? What is the result?
