I'm running madwifi-ng-r1784-20061027 and I see the same problem.
I applied the patch, and it didn't make a difference.
I enabled the athdebug and ieee802debug.
The last message from ath0: is 'ieee80211_scan_assoc_success',
after that, the only debug messages are beacons from the AP.
